Can another person understand what happened, find the supporting records and see what remains uncertain?
Build a dated chronology and an index of the records supporting each important fact. Preserve originals, distinguish observations from conclusions, and check the actual court’s presentation and witness directions.

What this guide helps you do
General record organization with Colorado small-claims preparation examples. This is not a forensic acquisition, recording-consent, discovery, privilege, disclosure or admissibility determination. The older state legal-help pages carry a migration notice; their numeric procedural details remain unverified.
Make a chronology that can be checked
Create one row for each important event: date, what happened, the source, who has direct knowledge and what is uncertain. Distinguish a document’s creation date, the date you received it and the event it describes. Preserve conflicting accounts. This is an original organizational method for making the factual record easier to review, rather than a finding that any event is proved.
Connect factual issues to source records
The current court preparation pages discuss documents, photographs, correspondence, receipts and other exhibits. Make an index that names each item, its source and the point it may support or contradict. Keep an unaltered original and use labeled working copies for notes. A summary should point back to the underlying material rather than silently replacing it. Source: Colorado small-claims opening and trial-preparation guide.
Identify witnesses and missing information
The legacy legal-help evidence page discusses witnesses with personal knowledge and categories of supporting records. Use those categories to identify who may know a fact and what remains missing. Its subpoena timing, service, mileage and discovery statements were not checked against current rules. Obtain suitable current advice before using a compulsory process or assuming a document must be provided. Source: Legacy Colorado small-claims witnesses and evidence overview.
Confirm how the court accepts material
Ask about current exhibit labels, exchange or submission arrangements, copies and permitted ways to present digital material. The plaintiff and defendant pages use different labeling examples, so keep the actual role and court directions in view. This guide has not tested a court upload or obtained a ruling on any evidence. Record the instruction and source with the preparation checklist. Source: Colorado small-claims defendant information.
Keep the source trail current
The older preparation index groups mediation, trial-date changes, witnesses, filings and trial procedure, but also displays a migration notice and points to a successor website. Treat that index as a list of research questions. Use current official court instructions and independently checked assistance for a real proceeding; neither a functioning link nor an old heading proves current law. Prepare a concise presentation and handover
Organize the main points, the relevant item for each point, calculations and unanswered questions. Record how any calculation was made. Keep court orders, submitted versions, acknowledgements and later responses separate from working notes. A person helping later should be able to distinguish original material, your explanation, what was actually supplied and what still needs confirmation.
A pathway to practice
- Describe the events: Dates, direct knowledge and uncertainty.
- Index the source records: Facts, documents and missing evidence.
- Check presentation needs: Court directions, witnesses and access.
- Preserve the handover: Originals, supplied versions and responses.
