What kind of help do I need, and how can I check whether a provider can offer it?
Prepare a short account of the problem and actual notices. Find a provider serving the place and subject, check professional status where relevant, and confirm the work, costs and acceptance before relying on assistance.
Evidence checked October 18, 2026 (America/Denver). Version 1.0. Desk review; no hands-on testing.
What this guide helps you do
Civil legal-help discovery, with a nationwide locator and Colorado intake and credential examples. This is a provider-selection and preparation guide; it does not establish a right to appointed counsel, individual eligibility, a suitable legal strategy or an attorney-client relationship.
Name the task before choosing the service
Write down the place, subject, parties, important events, documents received and the next known court or agency date. State the result you seek and the immediate question needing help. Distinguish information, a document review, advice, negotiation and full representation. This short preparation routine is an editorial aid, rather than a legal determination about which service the case requires.
Find a local civil legal-aid route
LSC’s locator is organized around address, city or map-based discovery of local funded organizations. A directory entry is a lead to a provider with its own service area and intake conditions. The initial page was read, but no location or result was tested. If the map fails, use a directly identified local provider and check its current instructions. Source: LSC civil legal-aid locator.
Read current intake conditions
Colorado Legal Services says all applicants complete an intake process that considers eligibility and available resources. Its offices serve listed counties and have different access instructions. On October 18, 2026, the Denver notice listed a temporary pause for several new application subjects, with a stated October 26 reopening and specified exceptions. Confirm the current office and issue before depending on that route; the notice is not a statewide closure. Source: Colorado Legal Services intake and office gateway.
Check credentials and the professional category
Use the responsible jurisdiction’s official regulator to check the actual person. Colorado’s gateway offers status and discipline-history research and distinguishes attorneys from licensed legal paraprofessionals. A name in a directory is not a completed credential check or a suitability endorsement. This review did not search any person or examine LLP practice scope. Ask the provider to explain their role for the proposed work. Source: Colorado attorney and LLP status-search gateway.
Clarify scope, price and responsibility
Ask what work the provider will perform, what remains with you, whether representation has actually been accepted, and how charges and additional expenses are handled. Keep the written explanation with the original notices. If help is unavailable, ask about another suitable route and retain the reason for nonacceptance. An unanswered application should remain an open task in your record.
Make a useful handover
Prepare a concise chronology, a list of the most relevant documents, known dates, the desired result and unanswered questions. Give a prospective provider only the information requested through an appropriate channel. Record the contact, actual reply and agreed next action. Continue checking real court or agency instructions while seeking help; this guide does not decide whether any time limit changes during that search.

- Define the need: Problem, place, notices and desired result.
- Find a suitable route: Service area, subject and intake conditions.

Resources and their limitations
LSC civil legal-aid locator
Use it for: Find an LSC-funded civil legal-aid organization by place.
Access and cost: Public locator is free; actual assistance depends on the local provider.
How to use it: Use the address/city search or map, then confirm the provider’s service area, issues, intake and availability.
Evaluation and limits: Instructions and initial locator page read. Extracted page contains geolocation/unmatched-search messages; no address, location permission, map interaction or provider result tested. No exhaustive directory or guaranteed representation claim. No stable substantive revision date established.
Alternatives: The local provider’s own page; USAGov or LawHelp directories as separately checked leads.

Colorado Legal Services intake and office gateway
Use it for: Find the office and intake route appropriate to the county and problem.
Access and cost: Public page is free; CLS describes free civil legal assistance subject to intake, eligibility, resources and case acceptance.
How to use it: Find the office serving the relevant county, read current intake notices and prepare the facts and documents before contacting that office.
Evaluation and limits: Metadata updated October 16, 2026. At capture Denver reception listed a pause for new housing, ID, tax and benefits applications with stated reopening October 26; specified family-violence applications and existing clients were treated separately. Greeley still displayed a September road-closure notice. Confirm current subject, office and access directly; do not generalize these notices statewide. No application, eligibility assessment, appointment, representation or response time tested.
Alternatives: LSC locator; another suitable local provider or official court self-help.

How to use it: Use the registration number or first and last name; distinguish an attorney from an LLP and review the actual record.
Evaluation and limits: Metadata published June 18, 2024 and modified March 3, 2026. Gateway only; no person searched, individual status verified, discipline decision read or suitability endorsement made. LLP scope and exceptions to practice rules were not researched.
Alternatives: The regulator for the actual jurisdiction; a suitable independent provider-selection process.

From the historical registry to current practice
Federal Domestic Assistance presents a program catalog organized by purpose, eligibility and how to apply; its visible subject index includes legal services. Modern legal-aid navigation is separately sourced. No historical program, office, contact, eligibility, funding, application instruction or adjacent insurance table is current guidance.
