Find the correct small-claims route and prepare the next step

Organized folders, a calculator, notebook and craft materials on a community worktable.

Which official instructions apply to my role, and what must I confirm before taking the next court step?

Begin with the actual court, papers and role. Use official instructions to check fit, forms, service or response questions, preparation and later collection. Keep each procedural question tied to a current source and a real case date.

Evidence checked October 18, 2026 (America/Denver). Version 1.0. Desk review; no hands-on testing.

What this guide helps you do

Colorado small-claims navigation example for potential claimants and people who received papers. The guide does not determine venue, jurisdiction, claim value, defenses, service validity, deadlines, recoverable costs or the best remedy. Other courts have different procedures.

Separate the dispute from the court procedure

Describe what happened, the parties, the result sought and the records supporting it. Then identify the court system and procedural route. Colorado’s opening page discusses small-claim fit and location before filing. Its numeric limits and fees must be checked against current law and the actual case; this guide does not decide whether a particular dispute belongs in small claims. Start from the correct role

If you received papers, identify who sued, what is claimed, the court, the stated date and the actions requested. The court’s defendant page warns that ignoring the case does not make it disappear. If you plan to start a case, use the opening route. Keep claim, response and possible counterclaim questions distinct, and obtain help when the effect of an option is unclear. Use the official instructions and record their limits

The official JDF 248 directory links the English guide and translated versions. This review read only the first five pages of a seven-page English PDF; fees, ADA information, legal advisory and terms on the remaining pages were not reviewed. Use the complete current file and actual court directions before acting. A folder date in a URL does not establish an edition. Source: Colorado JDF 248 official instructions directory.

Make a procedural question list

List the correct starting or response form, parties, location, filing channel, service or notice method, fees and actual dates needing confirmation. The retrieved JDF pages separate starting paperwork, notification, response and mediation. Keep a place for the authority and person confirming each item. This worksheet does not supply a universal service method or calculate a deadline. Source: JDF 248 small-claims guide: partial official PDF review.

Prepare the record and the presentation

The opening page recommends organizing exhibits and copies, identifying witnesses and making an outline of the key issues. Relate each item to a factual point you need to explain. Ask the responsible court about current exhibit delivery, copies, equipment and witness procedures. This preparation does not establish admissibility or permission to obtain another person’s records. Plan beyond the hearing

Keep orders, actual outcomes and unresolved obligations together. The court material distinguishes obtaining a judgment from collecting it; collection is a separate learning and procedural task. Compare the practical cost and available help before taking another step. If mediation is considered, use its current access and selection instructions and preserve the questions that need independent legal advice.
